Brian Glass (right) and Nathalie Cabrol uncover a large piece of fossilized wood near the drill site in the paleolake sediments. The wood was excavated and placed in sample bags for transport back to the lab. A specimen of the ancient wood is shown at right. This wood is amazingly well preserved considering that it may be as old as 23 million years. It was preserved by rapid burial in lake mud of the lake which used to fill the crater many millions of years ago.
