Véronique Juneau Function: Student Intern Affiliation: University of Ottawa I am currently doing my Honours degree in Environmental Science at the University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. For my undergraduate thesis, I am looking at the distribution of solutes and isotopes in vertical profiles through the active layer at different sites along drainage basins in and around Haughton Crater with the help of piezometers. I will sample pore waters and sediments in profiles below cobbles which host endostromatolites. The growth of this material may be linked to mineral and nutrients provided from the active layer in this permafrost setting. Measurement of the geochemistry and isotopes of solutes in these profiles, as they develop over the summer season, will help establish whether or not a biological origin is likely for these features. Spatial/temporal monitoring and soil profile measurements, field measurements of temperature pH and redox (for soil pore waters) will complement major ion and isotope analysis. |
