    Matthew Deans

    Function: Field Test Lead

    Affiliation: NASA Ames Research Center

Dr. Matthew Deans joined the Intelligent Robotics Group at NASA Ames Research Center in 2002. Matthew received his PhD. in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

Matthew's research focuses on applications of machine vision for robot navigation and control as well as automating image processing for remote science.

At HMP, Matthew will be leading the Human Robot Site Survey field test. We will be testing our rover control system for use in dense, systematic mapping of lunar like environments. The two rovers are carrying a Lidar for topographic mapping, and a Ground Penetrating Radar for subsurface stratigraphic mapping. Rover control will be performed locally through Field Operations, at base camp through Habitat Operations, and Remote Operations at Johnson Space Center. This test will gather metrics and experience with increased productivity for rovers executing dense systematic mapping.
