We have had a very successful field season this year! Our work has concentrated on furthering advanced Information and Computing Technologies (ICT) for next-generation spaceflight while supporting activities at HMP 2010.

The NASA K-10, Landing Site Survey (LSS), and Opportunistic Science activities have utilized SFU's next-generation PlanetNet suite of technologies and architectures for their core communications support. In particular, data communications solutions in the field have reached the point where multiple 3D and HD video streams can be communicated across regional distances in future activities.

SFU has been working on a new project, called the GIGASOC, in which new technologies will be developed and supported to allow for the use of Gigabit per second (Gbps) trans-solar system communication technologies, for maximum exploration effect. This is a new game changing capability and requirement for future advanced human and robotic missions. There are several components to this work, some of which have taken place at HMP this season, other planned for future seasons, and other planned for other projects and locations.

HMP 2010: Science Report by Valerie Meyers, Ph.D. (Space Life Sciences Division, Wyle Laboratories, NASA JSC)

Spaceflight leads to changes in the body’s immune system. These changes in immunity may decrease crew members’ ability to combat infections and increase their susceptibility to radiation and their risk of developing cancer during long-duration flights. Dr. Dr Valerie Meyers, a Wyle employee supporting NASA’s Space Life Sciences Division, was here to determine whether similar immune changes are occurring in HMP participants. Her research will help to determine the validity of this spaceflight analog for future immunity and countermeasure studies. Dr. Meyers collected blood samples from 4 volunteers and analyzed the presence of surface adhesion molecules on T cells in the field using the Accuri C6 portable flow cytometer, loaned by Accuri Cytometers, Inc. Plasma cortisol levels, an indicator of stress. Soluble surface proteins shed into the blood were also analyzed in the field using the Epoch spectrophotometer, loaned by BioTek. Finally, Dr. Meyers has collected saliva samples which will be returned to Johnson Space Center where they will be analyzed by Satish Mehta of EASI-Microbiology for evidence of viral shedding, a marker of immune suppression seen during spaceflight. This research seeks to provide insight into the mechanisms of immune dysfunction associated with chronic stress, which may help us find ways to minimize the negative effects of stress on astronauts as well as people involved in high stress occupations here on Earth.

Kelsey Young is a geologist in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University. Kelsey earned her undergraduate degree in geology from the University of Notre Dame where she studied Earth-based analogs for Mars. Specifically, she conducted fieldwork to study the interactions of lava and water in conjunction with examining similar features on the surface of Mars. While completing this work, she became interested in using terrestrial analogs to work on issues associated with manned space exploration. Kelsey is now working on her Ph.D. in geology, and is pursuing this interest by combining geology with the logistics of planetary surface exploration.

HMP 2010: Dr Matthew Deans (NASA Ames): K10 Robot Experiment

Dr Matthew Deans is the Deputy Group Lead of the Intelligent Robotics Group (IRG), in the Intelligent Systems Division (Code TI), at NASA Ames Research Center. He has significant experience in Field Robotics, participating in field experiments in Antarctica, the Arctic, Atacama Desert, Canadian Rockies, and several sites in the continental US. He was the field team lead for the K10 test at Haughton Crater, Nunavut Canada, in July 2007 and again in July 2010. The K10 experiment is looking at how to use robots to augment human space exploration. The K10 will follow up on field work done by humans by adding additional surveys, context imaging, 3-dimensional scanning, and in situ analytical instruments. These measurements will complement and extend the investigations that were started by field geologists last year.

Exploration Systems Support at HMP

Exploration Systems Support at HMP
Dr. Stephen Braham, Christine Pires, Steve Baird
copyright 2008 Mars Institute
A unique component of HMP is the level of support for advanced planetary exploration systems and operations, in full-up, end to end, mission operations experiments. HMP has high-speed connections to the Internet via two satellite dishes, which allows for audio, video and data links all the way from mission operations centres at space agencies to the entire region around HMP. On top of that, the network can be made to emulate connections, in terms of delay, that range from moon missions to missions to Jupiter.

Since 1999 the primary exploration systems support at HMP have been provided by Dr. Steve Braham, Mars Institute/Simon Fraser University (SFU) and his team. Dr. Braham, now in his tenth field season, is the Chief Field Engineer and Associate Director for HMP, and, this year. He is the lead of the Exploration Systems Operations Centre (ExSOC) project at his lab at SFU, PolyLAB, which is a unit of the SFU Telematics Research Laboratory, lead by Steve's long-term research partner Professor Peter Anderson.

Life to the Moon and Mars: Analogs for Space and Astrobiology (UF)

Science Report by Elaine Walker (EPO, Mars Institute)

Robert Ferl and Anna-Lisa Paul
Dr. Robert Ferl and Dr. Ana-Lisa Paul (UF)
copyright 2008 Mars Institute
The study of plants in space is usually associated with advanced life support systems. Dr. Robert Ferl and Dr. Anna-Lisa Paul, both faculty at the University of Florida, are studying the plants themselves, observing their biological reactions both in space environments and in microgravity environments such as NASA's C-9 jet, otherwise known as the "Vomet Comet".

Plants report more about their environment than humans and other animals do because they have to deal directly with their surroundings. Unlike animals, plants cannot get up and walk indoors when they experience environmental stress. They are equipped with genes that allow them to deal with a variety of stresses, as a result of their long evolutionary history in a particular environment.

Traverse Planning Software by Nick Wilkinson, Mars Institute, HMP Project Manager

Science Report by Elaine Walker (EPO, Mars Institute)

Lecture by Nick Wilkinson
copyright 2008 Mars Institute
At the moment, the only tool that is consistently used as a standard for traverse planning is the paper map. There are various tools and software programs used, but none is considered the standard. Nick Wilkinson, HMP Project Manager, has programmed his own traverse planning software from scratch that offers a wide range of features. He presented the software to the HMP participants during an evening lecture, explaining each feature in detail and also giving an idea of how the overall package can work for a group, perhaps even over a network, planning a traverse with a wide range of possible conditions.
