HMP-2000 DAILY SUMMARY REPORT
Weather The weather today was sunny, with just a few scattered clouds and temperature highs in the low 40s. Winds were mostly calm.Science and Exploration Research Charlie, Darlene, Marianne, and Patrick went to Comet Lake and adjacent ponds, 10 km north of Base Camp. They sampled lake sediments in search of diatoms, micro-organisms whose skeletal remains allow scientists to reconstruct past climates. Pascal collected additional samples from an ancient hydrothermal vent inside Haughton Crater, near Trinity Lake, 3 km SSE of Base Camp. Rick, Steve and Bruce worked on coordinating their radio comms research systems. Steve set up an advanced multicast videolink on Canada's next generation internet research network, while Rick and Bruce began testing the radio systems mounted aboard their NASA comms ATV. Tony was able to exchange uplink and downlink packages with the ExPOC at the Mission Control Center in spite of a temporarily reduced comms data rate (likely due to the current solar flare activity). Dr. George, who is coordinating the medical support for the HMP-2000 field season, met with base camp team members and reviewed medical histories with Dr. Rainer. Dr. Rainer and Doug have also been gearing up to continue the HMP-2000 medical research program begun by Dr. Jeff and Terry and delivered additional electronic Personal Information Carriers (PICs) to core field team members. Life on Devon The beautiful weather made for a very pleasant day. John, Joe and Joannie got the camp incinerator running at the "airport". AC and Samson continued work on constructing the wooden washroom. Marc C. filmed Pascal discussing HMP research at Haynes Ridge and continued editing a videofile for the project. The Discovery Channel USA TV crew and Pascal visited Wyle Hill (near Trinity Lake), a nearby massive impact ejecta block, a hydrothermal vent site, and Haynes Ridge also for some filming. The Mars Society hab assembly team is in Resolute Bay and is studying options to proceed with field activities. A PCSP Twin Otter brought in cargo and genome scientist Viktor Stolc of Stanford University. Terry Guest of Wyle Labs left on that same plane after a very successful stay. Mark Webb, assisted this evening by Margarita, cooked another great dinner: Enchiladas, Corn, and Mixed Fruit. Late this evening, "Contact" was watched on a DVD player in St John's Cathedral. We are 31 people at camp tonight, including 25 HMP field team members: Rick Alena, Joe Amarualik, Marc Boucher, Doug Butler, Steve Braham, Charlie Cockell, Mark Connolly, Marianne Douglass, Rainer Effenhauser, Bruce Gilbaugh, Tony Griffith, AC Hitch, Pascal Lee, Colleen Lenehan, Darlene Lim,, Margarita Marinova, George Martin, Samson Ootoovak, Gordon "Oz" Osinski, Joannie Pudluk, Sandy Salluviniq, John Schutt, Viktor Stolc, Patrick Van Hove, Mark Webb. 4 Discovery Channel USA TV crew members: Tom Eichler, Sean Glenn, Andy Liebman, Karin Mainville. 2 Discovery Channel Canada TV crew members: Ole Gjerstad, David de Volpi.
