This morning I walked with Ron Sidgreaves [left] and David Rosenbush [right] (both of Hamilton Sundstrand) through "Pete Conrad Valley" behind Tent City, through a network of valleys, to get some good exercise for the day. Elaine Walker (HMP Public Outreach Field Officer) practices some Tae Kwon Do side kicks. It is good to keep one's blood moving in this climate! The back country terrain in Pete Conrad Valley, near the NASA HMP base camp. The Mars Institute's Mars-1 HumVee Rover can be seen in the distance (center of photo). The Lowell Canal from which the NASA HMP base camp draws its water. A water pump line runs from the Lowell Canal to the NASA HMP base camp. Even this desolate-looking landscape offers plenty of opportunity for life to exist. Two flat tires on one ATV... Samson Simeonie (Deputy Base Camp Manager for the NASA HMP/Canadian Ranger) is fixing them. This evening the fog rolled in. The construction of the NASA HMP base camp's core module is almost complete. Next summer, the project's tent modules will be permanently connected to the core. Randy, Robby, and Rhoda (High School students from Grise Fiord) are having a towel fight with Alexis Lussier-Desbiens (yellow blur) after they've finished drying the dishes, while Paula Lindgren (graduate student, University of Aberdeen) looks on. Rick McCluskey, MD (NASA JSC flight surgeon) gave a talk this evening about the toxicity of Moon and Mars dust in relation to the health of astronauts.
