Field Update July 23, 2004 - Communication Upgrades Complete On the 21st, communications by satellite was established with the rest of the world using the new Simon Fraser University PlanetNet 3 system funded by the Canadian Space Agency. The system comprises upgraded radios and the use of Space Communications Protocol Standards (SCPS) gateways, built by Canadian company Xiphos, to accelerate internet access. Yesterday we established a new high power UHF/VHF repeater system, similar to last year's medium power system, that will increase the range of the MARS-1 Humvee traverses, and allow for increased safety in ATV traverses. Traverses were also completed to Trinity Lake and the Lake Sediments. Upgrades to base camp facilities continue as does research in the Arthur Clarke Mars Greenhouse. A photo report is now available with recent pictures. |
