NASA Haughton-Mars Project

July 13, 2003

The weather continues to be great for the 11th day in a row. Everyone has settled into their routines with research projects moving along. Stephen Braham and Trish Garner continue to setup and augment our communication infrastructure and test out new systems. Stephen has been upgrading and successfully testing new systems every year with increasing levels of complexity. His work could very well help future space explorers on Mars and elsewhere in space.

The greenhouse setup continues with the integration of its own power system including a windmill and solar array which are being erected over the next few days. Gordon Osinski and John Parnell continue their geologic exploration of the Haughton Crater. This Wednesday will see an increase in personnel at camp as we are expecting eight new arrivals including Chief Biologist Charles Cockell and a team led by Larry Young from NASA Ames Research Center who will test bio-inspired technologies for Mars aircraft mission planning and execution using the "Bat" Flyer robotic aircraft and other teleoperated flying platforms.

Pascal Lee and the first MARS-1 Humvee Rover team returned last night from their traverse and we should have a report on their traverse soon.
